Over the past 48 years, global oil demand has grown by an average of one million barrels per day, every year. This year, it grows faster. The timeline for peak demand is perpetually deferred — not by denial, but by arithmetic. The world depends on oil not as a convenience but as the operating substrate of civilisation itself: clean water, food logistics, medical supply chains, energy access for the two billion people still without it.

Political idealism does not diminish this dependency. Activist rhetoric does not reroute tankers. What diminishes it — over decades, with the appropriate technology and infrastructure — is rigorous scientific advancement. That advancement begins with finding the reserves that sustain the world while the alternatives mature.

The problem is not acquisition. It is perception.
Energy companies collectively hold vast archives of seismic data over known petroleum systems. Within those archives, exploration stopped not because the reserves were absent — but because the displays were insufficient. We explored to the limit of what we could see, and then we stopped. We assumed the limit of our instruments was the limit of the reservoir.

It was not. History demonstrates this with discipline: every time interpreters receive better subsurface imagery, they find more. Smaller targets. Thinner sands. Overlooked anticlines. The relationship between visual resolution and reserve discovery is not theoretical. It is statistical, consistent, and exploitable.

Reprocessing seismic data is legitimate science. So is reacquisition. But both carry the same fundamental problem: they demand enormous capital commitments — millions to tens of millions of dollars, months to years of elapsed time — before a single new geological insight is confirmed. The investment precedes the discovery. The risk is borne before the reward is visible.

In a capital-constrained industry, this is not merely inefficient. It is a structural barrier to exploration. Companies sit on seismic libraries of immense potential value and do nothing with them because the standard path to extracting that value is prohibitively expensive, slow, and uncertain.

The history of exploration geophysics is the history of resolution improvement. Every major technological leap — 3D seismic, time migration, AVO analysis — unlocked reserves that were invisible before it. High Visual Resolution Interpretation (HVRI) is the next such leap.
The Petrel ecosystem is not a constraint. It is our leverage.
StratiScape does not displace Petrel — it extends it. The world's exploration geoscientists work inside Petrel. We work inside Petrel too. Our value proposition is delivered inside the workflow where decisions are made, not in a parallel system that requires adoption friction.

Our Obligation to Science and to Society.
On the ethics of developing technology in the energy sector.
We are fully aware of the politics surrounding oil and gas. We engage none of it. We are scientists. Our obligation is to the rigorous, evidence-based practice of our discipline and to the human consequences that flow from doing it well or poorly.

The consequences of doing it well are: more reserves found from existing data, less capital wasted on speculative exploration, reduced environmental disturbance from unnecessary acquisition campaigns, and more energy available for the billions of people who still draw water from streams and cook over dung fires because the energy grid has not reached them.

The consequences of doing it poorly — or of not building this technology at all — are simply the continuation of preventable scarcity. We are unwilling to accept that.
