About Us

Based in Calgary, AB, Canada, StratiScape Visualization Technology (SVT) was founded to bring seismic visualization into the 21st century.

SVT has developed cutting edge visualization technologies that elevate seismic to a new level.

Our deep theoretical knowledge of the visual system, coupled with our decades of experience working with all aspects of seismic, have led to breakthrough technologies that will change the face of exploration forever.

Dr. Steven Lynch P.Geo

Principal Investigator and Founder

Dr. Steven Lynch is a Registered Professional Geophysicist in the Province of Alberta and the founder of StratiScape Visualization Technology. He spent the early part of his career in seismic processing, managing several Calgary-based processing centres before moving into research and development — designing software for refraction analysis, structural and stratigraphic modelling, and migration.

It was during that R&D period that Lynch began to suspect something others had overlooked: that the visualization technologies the industry had relied on for decades were not neutral windows onto the subsurface, but active filters — suppressing massive amounts of geological information that the seismic data already contained. The problem was not the data. It was how the data was being seen.

Recognizing that addressing this would require an entirely new foundation, he returned to the University of Calgary to study the science of perception and visual communication, receiving his PhD in Seismic Visualization in 2008. His thesis established that effective scientific visualization demands a rigorous understanding of how the human visual processing system works — and that conventional seismic displays had been designed around technological convenience rather than perceptual effectiveness.

To pursue the implications of that insight, Lynch founded the self-funded Visual Wavefield Project — a dual mandate organization focused both on developing the needed visualization technology and on completing the research necessary to prove that seismic data is far more information-rich than the industry had recognized. Both goals have now been accomplished.
The result is High Visual Resolution Interpretation (HVRI) and its commercial expression, StratiScape™ — software that transforms existing seismic data into three-dimensional surface displays, revealing subsurface detail that has always been present in the record but invisible to conventional colour and greyscale imaging. The technology is fully integrated with Petrel, the industry's dominant interpretation platform, and is supported by peer-reviewed research published in The Leading Edge, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists' primary journal.

With research complete and the product proven, Lynch has rebranded the Visual Wavefield Project as StratiScape Visualization Technology — marking the transition from scientific development to industry practice. He is currently pursuing SLB/Schlumberger ALM certification to distribute StratiScape through the Petrel Ocean Store.
